Our Services

Firing Service for Pottery.

Love making pottery but don’t have a kiln?  No problem, use ours!

A large number of items?  Consider hiring a kiln load.

Hire the kiln rather than pay per piece.  With this method of firing you can have the temperature and type of firing that you require.  You must book in advance to make sure that we have a kiln available for you.  We charge for this service in two ways:

YOU LOAD

Book the kiln for a certain day. Come and load the kiln, we will look after the firing, then you unload the kiln when firing is completed. It is Important that you unload the kiln on that day so it is available for someone else to use.  Note: extra charge of $40 if you don’t come to unload your kiln when finished firing.

WE LOAD

You bring the work in, we will load the kiln, look after the firing and unload the kiln ready for you to collect.

Print out & complete the form, review & accept the terms & conditions then bring it along to The Clay Shed with your items for firing!

Are you ready to fire? Our tips for best results.

¨ Ensure greenware, i.e. unfired pottery, is bone dry, completely hardened and ready for firing. DO NOT apply glaze to ANY greenware. Glazed greenware will not be accepted for firing.

¨ Pack ware into a sturdy box and fill surrounding space with padding, e.g. shredded paper, polyester fibrefill. DO NOT individually wrap each item in bubble wrap or paper. It traps moisture and increases both the likelihood of breakages during unwrapping and the time it takes to load the kiln. The longer it takes to load the higher the firing fee!

¨ Pack flatware, e.g. tiles, plates, vertically (as you would books on a shelf) as opposed to horizontally (we’ve lost count of how many plates on the bottom of a box arrive broken due to the weight of the ware on top of them!)

¨ Bisque ware ready for glaze firing MUST NOT have ANY glaze applied to the base. This includes a minimum of 5mm up from the base. Here’s an example of why.

¨ If wax resist is applied to your ware please note that waxing the bottom edges of a pot DOES NOT keep the glaze from running off the pot. The wax burns off way before the glaze melts, so this unfortunately doesn't help. The only purpose of wax resist is to make it easier for you to wipe the glaze off prior to firing. It does help to have an undercut or small break in the surface toward the bottom of the piece. This break will help stop glaze at that point. (But don't depend on it too much. Runny or too thick glaze will still run right over.)

¨ Cylinders, from vases, to mugs, to slab boxes, will always be more cost effective than wide bowls!

¨ Our Firing Service Request form must be completed in full and you must agree to our Terms & Conditions for ware to be accepted.

¨ Plan ahead! The average turnaround time for ware to be fired and ready for collection is approximately 2 to 3 weeks (considerably longer during peak times, particularly Easter, Mothers’ Day and Christmas).
